University of Alberta Timeline (1930–39)

1930

Fraternities make their first appearance.

Dentistry becomes a School under the Faculty of Medicine.

First graduate (research) scholarships are named in honour of Robert Tegler.

1931

The University affiliates with Mount Royal College of Calgary.

1932

Dr. Learned of the Carnegie Corporation visits the University as a whole and is particularly interested in the work of the Department of Extension.

Carnegie Corporation provides a $15,000 grant of over three years for book purchases, particularly for the Faculty of Arts.

1933

The University abolishes freshman initiation.

Carnegie Corporation gives the University $30,000 to develop Drama and Fine Arts

Banff School of Fine Arts opens under the Department of Extension

1934

The Ski Club is formed.

1935

Western Board of Music is established

1936

President Wallace leaves to head Queen’s University

Dr. Kerr, the first Dean of Arts and Science, is appointed President

Elizabeth Sterling Haynes travels over 16,000 miles in Alberta, teaching drama and adjudicating plays.

Ned Corbett leaves Extension to be Director of the Canadian Association for Adult Education.

Donald Cameron replaces Ned Corbett.

1937

Grade 12 replaces Grade 11 as the University entrance requirement.

1938

The Committee on graduate studies becomes a School.

School of Pharmacy is placed under the Faculty of Medicine.

Last Founders’ Day tea is hosted by former Premier Rutherford and his wife Mattie.

1939

School of Education becomes the College of Education.

War World II is declared.
